that, the references to different regiments are interesting and of historical value, while the names also arouse a sentimental pity for the men who braved the climate and conditions of old, and the equally brave women who shared their lot and sacrificed their children at a time when letters to or from Home took two months to travel, and the Stanley community must have been quite isolated.
The cemetery is in two sections, as stated yesterday, with a gap in the dates on the gravestones between the late Forties and early Sixties. Nearly a dozen graves have no inscriptions left, while others are not always clearly lettered or dated: hence it is possible that a few inaccuracies might have crept into the list given below.
The cemetery area shows signs of having suffered damage in the past from landslips and washouts, but is now being well cared for, and organised planting up of this forlorn God's acre has been carried out by the authorities.
The inscriptions are mostly the formal "sacred to the memory of", and the list of names follows:
Pte. Wm. Moulton, H.M. 75 Regt. the beloved husband of Sarah Jane Moulton, who died suddenly at Stanley on 21st June aged 29.
George Alexander Gordon, Capt. H.M. 98th Regt. who died at Chek Chu on the 10th Sept. aged 44 years and 1 day.
Cpl. George Blink, of H.M. 98th Regt., who departed from this life on the 12th November, 1843, aged 30 years. This stone has been erected by his brother non-commissioned officers of the Grenadier Company in grateful remembrance of a departed comrade.
Corpl. M. I. C. Halliday, H.M. 98 Regt. of Foot, who lost his life by an attack of Chinese pirates in the Bay of Chek Coo on 1st May 1844, aged 28 years. O Stranger pray that his sin be forgiven and that he now rest with his Father in Heaven.
Pte. John Stevens, H.M. 98 Regt. of Foot who lost his life by an attack of Chinese pirates in the Bay of Chek Choo on 1st May 1844, aged 38 years. His fate was sudden and severe but God above knows best. O Stranger drop one pitying tear and hope he now has rest. Remember thy Creator. Amen.
C. O. P. Sgt. Timothy Cummins of H.M. 18th R.I. Regt. who departed this life on 9th August 1845 aged 45 years, also his beloved wife, Margaret, who departed this life on 15th September 1845, aged 39. This tomb was erected by their three sons as a tribute of filial duty and respect.
Copeland, 11 Regt. who died on the 7th October, 1865, aged 37 years. May he rest in peace.
Soldier of the 2nd Batt. aged 23. May he rest in peace.
